Worked example — 10000 steps at 80 kg

10000 × 0.04 × (80 / 70) ≈ 457 kcal. With a 75 cm stride that's 7.5 km. Activity level: active.

How it works

The rule of thumb kcal ≈ steps × 0.04 × (weight / 70) is based on the Compendium of Physical Activities and Tudor-Locke et al. (2008). 0.04 kcal/step is the mid-range energy cost for moderate walking (~5 km/h) at 70 kg. The value scales linearly with weight — heavier walkers burn more per step. Stride length is roughly 41 % of body height; 75 cm is a solid default for adults.

Estimates. Actual burn depends on walking speed, incline, surface and individual efficiency. ±15 % deviation is normal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many calories does 10000 steps burn?+
About 400 kcal at 70 kg, 457 kcal at 80 kg, and 514 kcal at 90 kg. The rule of thumb kcal ≈ steps × 0.04 × (weight / 70) holds for moderate walking at ~5 km/h.
How far is 10000 steps in km?+
At an average stride of 75 cm, 10000 steps is 7.5 km. With a 70 cm stride: 7.0 km. With an 80 cm stride: 8.0 km. Stride length is roughly 41 % of body height.
Are 10000 steps a day really necessary?+
The 10000 figure traces back to a 1965 Japanese marketing campaign — research finds health benefits already at 7000–8000 daily steps. More is better; 10000 is a goal, not a hard threshold.
How accurate is this calculation?+
The rule of thumb has a typical ±15 % deviation. Higher precision requires individual measurement (e.g. indirect calorimetry) — for everyday tracking the estimate is more than enough.
Does walking uphill change the result?+
Substantially. Walking uphill can raise calorie burn by 50–100 %. The rule of thumb assumes flat terrain — adjust upward on inclines.
What about slow or fast walking?+
Strolling (< 3 km/h) burns roughly 20 % less; brisk walking or fitness walking (> 6 km/h) up to 30 % more than the rule of thumb.
What's a normal stride length?+
Adults walk with a 65–85 cm stride. Women: ~67 cm, men: ~75 cm. Quick estimate: height × 0.41.
