Frequently Asked Questions
What is running pace?+
Running pace is the time it takes to cover one kilometer (or one mile). It is the standard measure for endurance training. Source: USATF.
How do I calculate my pace?+
Pace (min/km) = time (min) / distance (km). Example: 30 min for 5 km = 6:00 min/km. This calculator derives pace, distance, or time from any two values.
What's a good pace for beginners?+
For beginners, 6:30–8:00 min/km (or 10:30–13:00 min/mile) is typical. The conversational test (you can still talk) matters more than speed.
How can I improve my pace?+
A mix of 80 % easy aerobic runs plus interval and tempo work yields lasting improvement. Source: polarized training (Stephen Seiler).
What's the difference between pace and speed?+
Pace is time per distance (min/km); speed is distance per time (km/h). Convert: speed (km/h) = 60 / pace (min/km).
What pace for marathon, half-marathon, 10K?+
Recreational averages: marathon ~5:30–6:30 min/km, half marathon ~5:15–6:15 min/km, 10K ~5:00–6:00 min/km. Elite athletes run significantly faster.
