What is the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR)?+
WHR is waist circumference divided by hip circumference. It indicates fat distribution and is a marker for cardiovascular and metabolic risk. Source: WHO.
What are the WHO cutoffs?+
Men: increased risk at WHR ≥ 0.90. Women: increased risk at WHR ≥ 0.85. Higher values are associated with greater type-2 diabetes and heart disease risk.
How do I measure waist and hip correctly?+
Waist: narrowest point between the rib cage and iliac crest, standing, at the end of a normal exhalation. Hip: widest part of the buttocks.
Is WHR better than BMI?+
Studies (Lancet 2011) suggest WHR predicts cardiovascular risk more reliably than BMI, especially in normal-weight individuals with central adiposity.
How can I lower an elevated WHR?+
Reduce visceral fat via calorie deficit, aerobic training, and a fiber-rich diet. Resistance training also improves insulin sensitivity.
Is WHR useful during pregnancy?+
No. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, WHR is not meaningful — abdominal circumference is physiologically altered.
