Frequently Asked Questions
What is ideal body weight?+
The statistically optimal weight for a given height — associated with lowest mortality and disease risk. It is an estimate, not a target everyone must hit. Source: WHO.
Which formulas are used?+
Common formulas: Devine (1974), Robinson, Miller, Hamwi. They were originally developed for medication dosing and produce slightly different values.
How does ideal differ from normal weight?+
Normal weight is the entire BMI range 18.5–24.9. Ideal weight is a point value within that range, often near BMI 22 — the statistical low-risk point.
How meaningful is ideal weight?+
It is rough guidance, since it ignores muscle mass, sex (in some formulas), and age. Body-fat percentage and waist circumference are more informative.
Should I aim exactly for the ideal weight?+
No. Studies show slight overweight in older adults is associated with lower mortality ('obesity paradox'). Wellbeing and health markers matter more than a point value.
What BMI is considered ideal?+
Studies (Lancet 2016) show lowest mortality at BMI 20–25 for adults under 65. For seniors, the optimum is closer to BMI 24–29.
