Frequently Asked Questions

What is HbA1c?+
HbA1c is the glycated portion of hemoglobin in red blood cells. It reflects the average blood-sugar level over the past 8–12 weeks. Source: American Diabetes Association (ADA).
What are the reference ranges?+
Normal: < 5.7 % (39 mmol/mol). Prediabetes: 5.7–6.4 % (39–47 mmol/mol). Diabetes: ≥ 6.5 % (48 mmol/mol). Source: ADA.
How are NGSP % and IFCC mmol/mol converted?+
HbA1c (mmol/mol) = (HbA1c % − 2.15) × 10.929. NGSP (%) is the older US standard; IFCC (mmol/mol) is the international standard.
What can falsely alter HbA1c?+
Anemia, hemoglobinopathies (e.g. sickle cell), pregnancy, kidney failure, and recent blood transfusions can distort the value.
How often should HbA1c be measured?+
Every 6 months if diabetes is stable; every 3 months if treatment is changing or control is poor. Source: ADA Standards of Care.
What HbA1c target is recommended?+
Individualized — typically < 7 % (53 mmol/mol). Young patients without comorbidities may target < 6.5 %; older patients often 7.5–8 % to avoid hypoglycemia.
