What You Should Know

Measurement sites

Normal temperature varies by measurement site: rectal (36.6–38 °C), oral (35.5–37.5 °C), axillary (34.7–37.3 °C), and tympanic (35.8–38 °C). Rectal measurement is most accurate.

Natural variation

Body temperature fluctuates by up to 0.5 °C throughout the day. It is lowest in the early morning and peaks in the late afternoon. Ovulation also raises temperature slightly.

When to act on fever

Fever above 38 °C (100.4 °F) in adults lasting more than 3 days, or above 39 °C (102.2 °F) at any age, warrants medical evaluation. Any fever in infants under 3 months needs immediate attention.

Hypothermia risk

Hypothermia occurs when body temperature drops below 35 °C (95 °F). Causes include cold exposure, immersion in cold water, and certain medical conditions. It is a medical emergency.
