Biological Age Calculator — The Science Behind the Concept

April 17, 2026·9 min read

Your date of birth is just a number — your biological age reveals how old your body actually is. Two 45-year-olds can be a decade apart biologically: the one with a healthy lifestyle, low blood pressure, and quality sleep ages slower than someone who smokes, carries excess weight, and lives under chronic stress.

Our Biological Age Calculator combines resting heart rate, exercise, sleep, diet, stress, and health markers into a personalised estimate — inspired by the PhenoAge framework.

What Is Biological Age?

Biological age describes the functional state of your body — measured by physiological markers rather than the calendar. It captures how fast you are ageing. Scientific frameworks such as PhenoAge (Levine et al., 2018) and epigenetic clocks (e.g. the Horvath clock) show that biological and chronological age can diverge substantially.

Research is clear: keeping your biological age below your chronological age is associated with meaningfully lower risks of heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and early death.

The Four Categories of Biological Age

Our calculator analyses four domains that drive biological ageing:

1. Cardiovascular

Resting heart rate, blood pressure, and exercise habits are core indicators of cardiovascular fitness. A low resting heart rate (<55 bpm) signals a trained heart and is associated with a biological age up to 3 years younger. High blood pressure (≥160 mmHg systolic) can add 4 years.

Resting Heart RateImpact
< 55 bpm (athlete)−3 years
55–64 bpm−1 year
65–74 bpm±0
75–84 bpm+2 years
≥ 85 bpm+4 years

2. Metabolic

BMI, diet quality, and chronic conditions such as diabetes or hypertension directly affect metabolic markers. Severe obesity (BMI ≥40) can raise biological age by up to 8 years. A Mediterranean or plant-based diet saves up to 2 biological years.

3. Lifestyle

Smoking, alcohol, and sleep strongly shape biological age. Heavy smoking adds up to 7 years. Poor sleep (<5 hours) costs another 4. Conversely, excellent sleep saves 1 year, and never smoking costs nothing.

4. Mental & Social

Chronic stress elevates cortisol, promotes inflammation, and accelerates cellular ageing. Very high stress adds up to 4 biological years. Social isolation is as harmful as smoking — a strong social network saves 1 year.

PhenoAge — The Scientific Background

The PhenoAge framework (Morgan Levine, Yale, 2018) uses nine blood biomarkers — including albumin, creatinine, glucose, C-reactive protein, and lymphocyte percentage — to predict biological age with remarkable accuracy. These markers explain why people born in the same year can age at vastly different rates.

Our calculator is a simplified, accessible version: instead of lab values, we use measurable lifestyle factors that research has established as strong predictors of biological ageing.

Related tools include the Life Expectancy Calculator — which estimates how many years you have ahead — and the Diabetes Risk Score, which evaluates metabolic risk factors in detail.

How Much Can You Change Your Biological Age?

ActionImpact (biological years)
Quit smoking (heavy → never)−7 years
Sedentary → 5+× vigorous exercise/week−5 years
BMI ≥40 → normal weight−8 years
Sleep <5h poor → 7–8h good−7 years
Diet very poor → excellent−6 years
Chronic stress → low stress−5 years

Estimated impacts based on epidemiological studies. Individual results vary.
